Transport shares are derived from two Israel Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) census public-use files (PUFs):
| Census | File | Commuters |
|---|---|---|
| 2008 | census2008bike.csv | ~385 k |
| 2022 | census2022bike.csv | ~761 k |
Only persons who reported a workplace commute mode are included (codes 98/99 excluded from 2008). Each person is weighted by their CBS sampling weight (mishkal). The transport share for an area is the weighted percentage of commuters using each mode.
The CBS geography has three tiers, mapped to the terminology used here:
| Display name | CBS code | Coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Sub-borough | ROVA / TAT_ROVA | 19 large cities (Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Haifa…) |
| Borough | TAT_ROVA | ~35 medium cities (Netivot, Dimona, Eilat…) |
| City | SEMEL_YISHUV | All other settlements |
The aggregation toggle (Sub-borough / Borough / City) re-aggregates on the fly using CBS sampling weights, without re-fetching any data.
2022 single-year view: uses the CBS 2022 statistical areas geodatabase (EPSG:2039).
2008 single-year view: uses a dedicated 2008 sub-area shapefile (325 polygons, large cities only). Medium and small cities use 2022 boundaries with 2008 census values.
Change view (2008→2022): always uses 2008 boundaries. For each 2008 polygon the 2022 share is derived by area-weighted spatial overlay against all overlapping 2022 polygons within the same settlement (325/325 polygons matched).
Grey polygons have no match in the census PUF. In the 2008 view this affects East Jerusalem Arab neighbourhoods (excluded from the 2008 census) and a small number of outer sub-areas not present in the file. These absences are genuine data gaps, not a display error.
Single year: blue → cyan → green → yellow → orange → red, capped at the 95th percentile of values across all areas for the selected mode and year.
Change view: diverging scale centred at zero — blue = decrease, red = increase — capped at the 95th percentile of absolute changes.
