How much do Polymarket prices know, and when?

Jason Furman's post after the 2024 US election showed contract prices lining up with win rates on the 45° line. This page rebuilds that chart from Polymarket's own data, then breaks it down by time before the event, type of event, trading volume and number of traders, with market-level regressions. The second page looks at individual traders' profits, at prices after large orders, at trading that looks like pushing the price and at whether knowing who trades beats the price; the third applies all of it to the 2026 Israeli election markets, and the fourth looks at who keeps trading and how traders behave.

What the data show

Prices are traded prices. For every market and every day, the price used is the last price at which someone actually traded, from Polymarket's trade records. Polymarket's own price-history series is a quote that, in markets with an empty order book, sits near 50¢ whatever the odds; see "Quoted prices against traded prices" below.

  1. Furman's picture holds, and the longshot bias disappears. Pooling 586,610 market-days, win rates sit on the 45° line. With traded prices, contracts under 10¢ win within half a cent of their price at every horizon. The calibration slope is 0.98–0.99 from 1 day to 1 week out and falls to about 0.92 at 2–3 months, where favourites above 90¢ are overpriced by about 5¢.
  2. Information arrives steadily over the last three months. Following the same 10,059 markets every day, Brier skill (the share of outcome uncertainty the price resolves) rises from 0.46 90 days before the event to 0.64 at 30 days, 0.76 at a week and 0.82 at a day.
  3. The number of traders predicts signal; lifetime volume barely does. A week out, Brier skill rises from 0.38 in the bottom quintile of wallets that had traded so far to 0.70 in the top, and the gradient holds within every event type, from the bottom to the top trader-count tercile (sports 0.39 → 0.67, politics 0.44 → 0.75, crypto 0.35 → 0.70). By lifetime volume, skill is flat (0.53–0.57). In the regressions, a week out each doubling of traders adds about 0.08 of Brier skill holding type, dollar volume, market age, staleness and year fixed (0.05 a day out); a month out the effect is not distinguishable from zero once dollar volume is controlled. Knowing which wallets trade adds only about 1% to forecasts beyond the price a day out (traders page, section 7). Thin markets are also too extreme: their calibration slope is about 0.86–0.91.
  4. "Will X say / tweet …" markets know the least, even when crowded. With all controls they trail elections by about 0.30 of Brier skill a week and a day out (0.18, less precisely estimated, a month out). With the most traders they reach only 0.37 a week out, and their prices are too extreme (slope 0.87). This is the one type where the person named in the question controls the outcome. A large order there moves the price 3.1¢, more than in any other type, and the move is gone a week later (traders page).
  5. Prices overreact. Holding today's price fixed, last week's price move predicts the outcome with a negative sign: about 15% of a week's move reverses by resolution. The reversal is larger in thin markets (about 23%) and, a day before the event, in mentions markets (about 23%). That is the pattern noise traders, or someone pushing the price, would leave. The traders page measures how much trading looks like pushing the price (a few percent of large-order dollars), and finds that prices after large orders keep moving about as often as they come back (momentum vs. reversal).
  6. Elections are informed early; other types catch up late. The gap between elections and crypto, geopolitics, politics, tech and economy markets is widest far from the event and closes as it approaches: elections already sit at 0.59 of skill a month out, but a day out these types match or beat elections (0.64).

Furman's chart, rebuilt

Each dot is one of 50 price bins, pooling 586,610 market-days: every market's last traded price once a day over its last two weeks. Like Furman's chart, it lines up on the diagonal.

This is the easiest version of the test. Most market-days are priced near 0 or 1 just before resolution, and repeated days of the same market count as separate observations. The sections below take one price per market at a fixed distance from the event instead.

1 · Time before the event

Each panel takes one price per market, the last trade a fixed time before the event, and plots the share of markets that resolved Yes, in 20 price bins with 95% intervals. The dashed line is perfect calibration.

Holding the sample fixed removes the composition effect, so this is the cleaner read of how information accumulates as the event approaches.

Calibration is close to perfect up to a week out and slips at 1–3 months, where long-dated favourites are overpriced. What changes much more is how far prices have moved toward 0 or 1. Across all markets, skill falls only gently with the horizon (0.57 a day out, 0.46 at three months), because the sample changes: short horizons add many short-lived sports markets that are hard to call before they are played. Holding the market set fixed shows the steeper rise, from 0.46 to 0.82.

2 · Type of event

Event types come from Polymarket's tags, with "will X say / mention / tweet …" questions pulled out first, because the person named can directly decide the outcome. Calibration slopes are close to 1 for most types; the exceptions are mentions markets (0.87 a week out, 0.80 a month out) and, at a month, geopolitics and "other" (0.80–0.84).

3 · Trading volume

Volume is each market's lifetime traded volume, in quintiles. With traded prices, it predicts signal only weakly: a day out, skill is 0.53 in the bottom quintile and 0.62 in the top; a week out the quintiles are within 0.04 of each other. Thin markets are still too extreme far from the event (slope 0.82 a month out in the bottom quintile). With quoted prices instead, the volume gradient looks much steeper, but most of that comes from meaningless quotes in untraded markets.

Terciles are computed within each event type, so this compares thin and thick markets on the same kind of question.

4 · Traders and volume before the horizon

Here markets are sorted by how many distinct wallets, and how many dollars, had traded by 1 week and by 1 day before the event. Unlike lifetime volume, these measure only activity the price at that moment could reflect, and wallet counts are harder to inflate with wash trading than dollar volume.

This is a correlation. More traders may make prices sharper, or traders may crowd into questions where information is easier to find. The regressions in section 6 hold the event type, market age and other controls fixed, but cannot rule out the second story.

Counts come from up to 10,000 trades before each horizon per market, from 61,431 markets. 4% of market-horizons hit that cap; their counts are lower bounds and they all sit in the top quintile.

6 · Regressions: what predicts how much a market's price knows

Each observation is one market at a fixed number of days before the event. The dependent variable in tables A and E is the market's contribution to Brier skill: how much its price beat the event type's base rate, scaled so that its average within a type equals that type's Brier skill. Coefficients therefore read in Brier-skill units: 0.10 means 0.10 more of the outcome uncertainty resolved. Standard errors are clustered by event.

One observation per market and horizon, at 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 10, 14, 21, 30, 45, 60 and 90 days before the event. Dependent variable as in table A, with the base rate computed by type and horizon. Interactions use log(days / 7), so main effects are at one week, and a positive interaction means the effect is larger further from the event. Day effects included. Standard errors clustered by event.

One observation per market priced 7 and 14 days before. If prices are efficient, the past week's change adds nothing once today's price is known (coefficient 0). Positive means prices underreact (moves continue); negative means they overreact (moves reverse). Standard errors clustered by event.

Quoted prices against traded prices

Polymarket's price-history endpoint returns a quoted price that tracks the order book. In a market nobody is trading, the book can be a stray bid near 1¢ and an ask near 95–99¢, so the quote sits just under 50¢ regardless of the odds. Those quotes pulled the 45–50¢ bins far below the 45° line: a week out, quoted prices of 45–50¢ won only 32% of the time. With the last traded price, the same band wins 45%, and the dip disappears.

Robustness

The main patterns survive each check. Weighting events equally, so a 20-candidate race counts once rather than 20 times, changes skill by up to 0.04. Dropping markets that resolved more than a day before their scheduled end, mostly "will X happen by date" questions that resolved Yes early, lowers skill by up to 0.05 and the slope to 0.89–0.96. By year of resolution, skill a week out is 0.55 in 2024 and 0.54–0.56 in 2025–26; a month out it fell from 0.56 in 2024 to 0.49 in 2026, as the platform grew into more and thinner markets.

Weighting each event equally (multi-candidate events split their weight)

How this was built

Sample. All closed Polymarket events from the public Gamma API (1.15 million events, through Oct 2026), keeping yes/no markets that resolved cleanly to 1/0 with at least $1,000 in volume, excluding auto-generated recurring series. 61,518 markets in 15,492 events had at least one trade in the 90 days before the event (resolving Oct 2023–Oct 2026).

Prices. For each market, the full trade history up to the event from the Data API (up to 10,000 trades paged back in time; for the 3% of markets with more, each older day is queried separately). The price on day d is the last trade at or before d days before the event, expressed as the price of the first listed outcome (usually "Yes"). Trades, distinct wallets and dollars traded are counted up to the same moment.

Event time. The earlier of the scheduled end date and the actual close. Polymarket's close time alone lags the real-world event by 12–20 hours at the median, because of the resolution process.

Uncertainty. 95% intervals come from 200 bootstrap draws that resample whole events (100 for the daily curves); regression standard errors are clustered by event.

Next steps. Separate the effect of traders from the selection of questions traders choose, for example with events that split into near-identical markets. Look at the price paths of mentions markets in their final hours. Model favourites' overpricing at long horizons, which may reflect the cost of capital locked up in a contract that pays no interest.

AUC
The chance that a market that resolved Yes was priced above one that resolved No. 0.5 is a coin flip, 1 is perfect ranking. Pure discrimination; ignores calibration.
Brier skill
The headline number. 1 minus the mean squared error of price as a forecast, relative to always forecasting the group's base rate. It equals (resolution − miscalibration) / uncertainty, so it reads like an R²: the share of outcome uncertainty the price resolves, net of bias. 0 means no better than the base rate.
Log skill
The same idea with the log score (a McFadden pseudo-R²), prices clipped to 1–99¢. It punishes confident prices that turn out wrong much harder than Brier skill does.
Slope
Regression of the outcome on price. 1 means calibrated; below 1 means prices are too extreme, above 1 means too timid.
Gap <10¢ / >90¢
Mean price minus win rate among contracts priced under 10¢ (or over 90¢). Positive under 10¢ means longshots are overpriced; negative over 90¢ means favourites are underpriced.
